The looming threat of cryptographically relevant quantum computers mandates a worldwide migration to post-quantum cryptography over the coming 5-10 years.
We are looking for a candidate with a PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a closely related field to work on post-quantum cryptography. The successful candidate will have a strong track record demonstrated by publications in top-tier journals and international conferences, experience with post-quantum cryptography, as well as strong analytical skills and the ability to work independently. Moreover, a good knowledge of cryptographic engineering is an advantage. You must be highly motivated and be able to demonstrate your potential for conducting original research in post-quantum cryptography. We expect the candidate to have good communication and collaboration skills and be fluent in English, both in academic writing and speaking. Finally, the successful candidate will have good interpersonal skills and be willing and able to contribute to Simula UiB's working environment.
Some new standards have been established already, but a lot of work is still needed for a successful migration, ranging from a wider portfolio of post-quantum secure primitives (both in functionality and footprint), increased confidence in the underlying assumptions through advanced cryptanalysis, improved implementations with high assurance (e.g. against microarchitectural or side-channel attacks), and integration of primitives in wider protocols and products.
The successful applicant will be able to explore and contribute to these exciting research and development questions, with an opportunity to set their own research agenda. Specific research questions will be discussed with the successful applicant, so they can best complement current expertise. By developing and shaping your own research project, you can create a real-world impact on the future deployment of cryptography and, hence, the digital society of tomorrow.
Simula UiB currently has 11 early career researchers working on a range of research problems in cryptography and information theory. We can offer a vibrant, stimulating, and inclusive working environment to successful candidates. The position is for three years, with a possible extension of one year.
Simula UiB offers:
Excellent opportunities for conducting high-quality research as part of a highly competent and motivated team of researchers.
An informal, inclusive and international working environment.
Support for travel and opportunities to build international networks.
Modern office facilities, located at Marineholmen in the city centre of Bergen.
A competitive salary; starting salary from NOK 579 700.
Numerous employee benefits, including access to a company cabin, sponsored social events, an equipment budget, and a comprehensive travel/health insurance policy.
Relocation assistance, including complimentary Norwegian language courses.
Healthy wellness and work-life balance arrangements.
