About the Job

We have a vacancy for a position at the Department of electronic systems. 

As a response to the chip crisis, Europe is mobilizing through the European Chips Act on areas such as security of supply, innovation and technology leadership. As part of this initiative Europe has made significant investments in new infrastructure and capacities, such as pilot lines and a design platform. To facilitate innovation and utilization of these new capacities a network of national chips competence centers has been established and will play a vital role in this European initiative. CC-NorChip is the Norwegian competence center for chips and sensor technologies, appointed and co-funded by EU Chips Joint Undertaking and the Research Council of Norway. The competence center will play a key role in strengthening the competitiveness, innovation and technology leadership of Norwegian and European companies. The goal of CC-NorChip is to bolster the Norwegian semiconductor, chip and sensor ecosystems through offering access, awareness, services, skills and network.

NTNU has a leading role in the project as facilitator for the access to capacities, with special responsibilities in facilitating access for SMEs and academic institutions towards future integrated circuit technologies, including a sub 2nm NanoIC pilot line. Access to Design platforms, is another foreseen responsibility for NTNU, but also supported by SINTEF, University of Oslo, University of Southern Norway, University of Tromsø, and the Electronic Coast organization. NTNU will also be involved in facilitation access to capacities other technologies including, but not necessarily limited to, advanced fully depleted silicon on insulator technologies, piezoMEMS, advanced packaging and integration, ultra wide bandgap materials, photonics ICs and quantum technologies.

Duties of the position

A position should be filled to manage responsibilities related to the technologies mentioned above. 

The successful candidate will have an important and independent role in the skills development regarding chip design, micro-/nanotechnology and photonics and be part of the development support and tech transfer teams. In addition, NTNU will be part of the awareness raising and promotion team, and duties related to this are also part of the responsibilities of the position, aiming to facilitate access to mentioned technologies for SMEs and academic institutions

Required selection criteria

The successful candidate must: 

• Have a master’s degree in physics, electrical engineering or closely related fields, and preferably a PhD in similar topics.  
• Have a strong background in physics, electrical engineering or related fields.  
• Document a thorough knowledge in English (equivalent to a TPEFL score of 600 or more).  
• Have a strong background and experience with integrated circuits design, including the use of state-of-the art EDA tools. 
• Be eager to expand his or her knowledge related to any technologies that may be relevant for the CC-Norchip consortium.  
• Have excellent abilities to communicate in written and oral form.  
• Be self-driven and able to work independently.

Preferred selection criteria

The candidate should:  

• Have good language skills within one or more Scandinavian languages. 
• Have experience with mixed signal, full custom integrated circuit design from industry. 
• Have good knowledge related to all stages of integrated circuits fabrication and test.  
• Should show a keen interest in multidisciplinary innovation and research.  
• Have good programming skills.  
• Be cooperative and have excellent interpersonal skills.  
• Be flexible and able to adapt to changing conditions and tasks throughout the project.  
• Be prepared and able to do some traveling, to cooperate with external organizations

Salary and conditions

The gross salary for the position of researcher (code 1108) is normally remunerated at gross from NOK 550 000 – 700 000 before tax per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. And the gross salary for the position of researcher (code 1109) is normally remunerated at gross from NOK 590 000 – 750 000 before tax per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund,

Due to the duration of the position, it is considered a permanent employment at NTNU. Note the project has funding for the position until February 1, 2029. If the employee doesn't not secure new project funding, the employment will terminate on this date.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU.

The position is subject to external funding.
