Dr Ziaei group at the Kavli Institute for System Neuroscience (KISN) explores the structural and functional neural networks underlying social and emotional processing in aging. We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic PhD student to join the lab in Fall 2025, to help better understand the emotional and brain changes that occur in aging. More specifically, Dr Ziaei’s group aims to explore how individual differences in emotion perception can help us to better understand emotional aging brain. We are running a multi-modal, deep sampling study in which participants will be tested over a period of time extensively. We will examine the whole brain as well as areas such as the locus coeruleus and medial temporal lobe to explore interaction between cortical and subcortical regions during emotion perception among healthy and clinical populations in late adulthood. We will use the only Norway 7T MRI scanner for this study.
Your immediate leader will be Associate Professor Maryam Ziaei.

The position offers a scholarship for full time for four years.

In the position of PhD Candidate, code 1017, your gross salary will normally be NOK 536 200,- per annum depending on qualifications and seniority. A 2 % statutory contribution to the State Pension Fund is deducted from the salary.
The employment period is 4 years.
For employment as a PhD Candidate, it is a prerequisite that you gain admission to the PhD programme in medicine within three months of your employment contract start date, and that you participate in an organized doctoral programme throughout the period of employment.

For the necessary academic and social interaction, it is a prerequisite that you are physically present and available to the institution on a daily basis.
